Gladiators at the Amphitheatre
Kate Markland
When Gabriel’s school topic on the Romans came up, I knew it was the perfect opportunity for us to visit the historic grass-covered amphitheatre in Cirencester. Nestled in the heart of the Cotswolds, this ancient site has always intrigued me, but seeing it through the eyes of my excited son would surely add a layer of magic to the experience.
A Journey Back in Time
The amphitheatre itself is a marvel—an oval structure surrounded by a lush, green hillside. It was built in the 1st century AD and could hold around 8,000 spectators. I loved the idea of walking in the footsteps of history, imagining what it must have been like for the Romans who once filled this space with their cheers and gasps. But it was Gabriel’s infectious energy that truly brought the place to life.
Unleashing the Gladiator Within
Once we reached the amphitheatre, Gabriel wasted no time. He charged down the hill, his arms outstretched as if wielding an imaginary sword. “I’m a gladiator!” he shouted, his voice echoing off the stone walls. It was a delightful sight to see him so animated and filled with joy, his laughter ringing through the ancient grounds.
I couldn’t help but join in on the fun. Together, we ran up and down the grassy slopes, pretending to be gladiators training for battle. Gabriel’s enthusiasm was infectious; he was determined to put on a show. He would dash to the top of the hill and then come racing down, pretending to strike heroic poses as he charged back up, giggling all the while.
Learning Through Play
As we played, I found myself reminiscing about the lessons Gabriel had been learning at school. The amphitheatre wasn’t just a beautiful historical site; it was a living classroom where he could truly engage with the past. I asked him about what he’d learned about Roman gladiators, and he eagerly recounted stories of their bravery and the games they played.
“Mum, did you know that some gladiators were really famous?” he said, his eyes wide with excitement. “They had their own fan clubs, just like sports stars today!” It was heartwarming to see how his enthusiasm for learning came alive through our adventure.
The Perfect Day
After running and laughing to our hearts' content, we finally took a moment to rest on the grass. Gabriel sprawled out, looking up at the sky, while I enjoyed a moment of quiet reflection. It struck me how wonderful it was to explore history in such an interactive way, blending learning with laughter and movement.
Conclusion: Making Memories in Cirencester
Visiting the grass-covered amphitheatre in Cirencester was more than just a trip to a historical site; it was an opportunity for Gabriel and me to connect through play and learning. He truly embraced his inner gladiator, and I loved every moment of our adventure together.
As we drove home, tired but happy, I couldn’t help but think about how important it is to explore the world around us and make learning a fun and interactive experience. Days like this are what memories are made of, and I look forward to our next adventure—wherever that may take us!
