First Wood-Chopping

Kate Markland

Gabriel recently had the opportunity to try his hand at something new and exciting: chopping wood! With a bit of guidance, he was trusted with an axe and given the task of preparing kindling for a fire. I could see the thrill in his eyes—this was serious work, and he was determined to get it right.

He began carefully, learning how to angle the axe and control his swing. After a few initial attempts, he found his rhythm, splitting the wood into neat pieces of kindling with growing confidence. Every successful chop brought a look of satisfaction to his face, as he saw the bag slowly filling up with his efforts.

When Gabriel finished, we gathered up his hard-earned pile of kindling and built a cozy fire together. Watching the flames catch on the wood he’d chopped himself was a proud moment for him.

Gabriel sat back, warmth radiating from both the fire and his sense of accomplishment. This first experience of wood-chopping turned out to be more than just a task—it was a step toward greater responsibility and a real confidence boost for him.
