Colorful Skies and High-Flying Fun
Kate Markland
One blustery day, Gabriel and I packed up a colorful parachute-style kite and headed to Minchinhampton Common for a bit of fresh-air fun. The sky was thick with grey clouds, but that didn’t dull the bright reds, blues, and yellows of the kite as it danced against the backdrop of the moody skies.
Gabriel took on the challenge of getting it airborne, running with all his might until—just like magic—the kite lifted up and began to catch the wind. The gusts were steady, and soon enough, the kite was soaring high, tugging at the line as Gabriel gripped it tightly with both hands. His face lit up with a mix of pride and exhilaration as he held his ground against the wind, guiding the kite and keeping it steady. Every strong gust brought a little thrill, with Gabriel bracing himself and laughing as the kite pulled hard, as if it might whisk him up into the air, too!
We spent ages watching it swoop, dip, and rise, its bright colors cutting through the grey above. Flying a kite feels timeless, but doing it together, taking turns holding the line, and seeing the sheer joy on Gabriel’s face was what made it a perfect afternoon.
