Bournemouth Fun Run:

Kate Markland

Taking part in the 2022 Bournemouth Fun Run was an exciting first for both Gabriel and me. We signed up for the 1km race, which started at the pier, following a route along the promenade and back.

Gabriel a great runner became a bit nervous about participating on the morning of the run, he seemed unsure about running with so many other children and in such a big event, but I could tell he was also curious and eager to give it a go.

The promenade was buzzing with energy. The route was cordoned off, so Gabriel was able to line up confidently at the start, ready to take on the run with other young runners. When the starting horn blew, he took off like a shot, racing alongside the faster kids, his nerves quickly forgotten in the excitement of the moment.

I jogged along behind, laughing as he sprinted ahead with determination and the pure joy of running free. The 1km route felt just right for Gabriel’s. He kept up his pace with the other children, finding his stride as they ran toward the turnaround point and back.

As I reached the finish line, I saw him waiting there, beaming with pride and excitement, his nervousness from earlier completely transformed into confidence. He had done it! The volunteer handed him a medal, which he accepted with the biggest smile.Gabriel wore that medal for the rest of the day, proudly showing it off and reliving his sprint along the promenade.

It was more than just a race; it was a reminder of the joy in trying something new, pushing through nerves, and realising what he’s capable of. We both left feeling accomplished, Gabriel a little faster and a lot braver, and already talking about doing it again next year!
