Celebrating the Launch of The Adventures of Gabriel

This past weekend marked a huge milestone for Kate Markland, as she appeared on Times Radio during the Cheltenham Literature Festival to celebrate the official launch of her heartfelt children’s book, The Adventures of Gabriel.

Live on air, Kate shared the powerful inspiration behind the story and spoke passionately about the importance of children writing for themselves—and for each other.

“It’s so important that children know, from a young age, that dragons and demons can be overcome,” Kate told Times Radio. “Writing gives them the power to express what they’re feeling, to imagine their way through difficulty, and to connect with others through shared experiences.”

A Story Born from Connection and Courage

The Adventures of Gabriel isn’t just a book—it’s a story born from deep personal connection. Co-created by Kate and her son, Gabriel, during a time of separation, the book became a way for them to stay connected, process big emotions, and build resilience together.

Empowering Children Through Story

Speaking at one of the UK’s most prestigious literary events, Kate reminded us that storytelling is not just a creative outlet—it’s a vital tool for emotional growth. She encouraged parents, educators, and listeners to give children the space and freedom to create their own narratives.

“When children write their own stories, they begin to realise they are the heroes. They don’t have to be rescued—they are strong, creative, and capable of facing anything life throws their way.”

The Adventures of Gabriel

In the book, young Gabriel and his trusty sidekick, Platy the Platypus, go on magical adventures, confronting fears, solving problems, and discovering inner strength. The story is both entertaining and empowering—perfect for children aged 8–12 navigating their own journeys through life’s ups and downs.

What’s Next?

With the book now available and the story reaching listeners across the UK, Kate continues her mission to help children turn adversity into agency through storytelling.
