Springtime Cycling in Windermere
Kate Markland
A springtime bike ride in Windermere has a magic all its own. Gabriel and I set out one sunny morning, winding our way along the quiet country lanes, surrounded by fields fresh with the season’s new growth. The air was crisp, the hills were green, and everywhere we looked, lambs were dotting the fields—a sure sign that spring had truly arrived.
The lanes were peaceful, perfect for cycling, and Gabriel did brilliantly tackling the hills that Windermere is known for. He powered through with determination, taking on each incline with impressive grit and keeping up a good pace. I cheered him on from behind, proud of his effort and smiling as he reached the top of each hill with a triumphant grin.
As we rode, the fields seemed to come alive with the bleating of lambs, and Gabriel was completely captivated. When we stopped for lunch in a grassy spot by the side of the lane, lambs were grazing and playing in the fields around us, adding a cheerful energy to the peaceful landscape. Gabriel couldn’t resist trying to get closer, inching forward slowly, talking softly to them. The lambs were a little timid, but with his gentle approach, he got surprisingly close before they bounced off to join their mothers.
After lunch, we continued on, soaking up the spring air and the beauty of the countryside. Cycling in Windermere in the spring, with lambs in the fields and green hills all around, felt like a scene out of a storybook. By the time we reached home, we both agreed it was one of the most memorable rides of the season—filled with simple joys, gentle hills, and a touch of springtime magic.
