Rainy Day Walks
Kate Markland
After a long, rainy day spent indoors, Gabriel and I decided we’d had enough of being cooped up and headed out into the damp fields around South Cerney. Rain or shine, sometimes fresh air is the best medicine—and as Gabriel reminded me, “That’s what wellies are made for!” So, with waterproofs on, hoods up, and wellies firmly in place, we ventured out to see what the rain had brought to our little village.
Our first stop was to visit the alpacas, who were huddled in their sheds, looking out at us with what I’m convinced was amusement as we tramped past. They seemed quite content to stay dry, unlike us, who were splashing in puddles and following the squelchy paths. Gabriel waved at them, giggling at their curious expressions, before we continued down along the riverside.
Rain-Soaked Fields and Puddle Jumping
The fields around us were soaked, the grass shiny with droplets, looking fresh and bright, despite the clouds. We found a series of big, muddy puddles, and it didn’t take long for Gabriel to start stomping through each one with unrestrained glee. There’s something wonderfully freeing about a rainy walk when you’re dressed for it—muddy splashes and all! We splashed and laughed our way down the field, the steady patter of rain on our hoods adding a soothing rhythm to our walk.
Warming Up at Home
After a satisfying walk, knowing that our efforts to brave the elements had paid off, we headed home. We peeled off our wet layers and, with the promise of warmth ahead, jumped into hot baths, letting our cold toes and noses slowly thaw.
Then came the best part of a rainy-day adventure: hot chocolate. Gabriel and I wrapped ourselves in cozy blankets, sipping the warm drinks, feeling both tired and revived by our outdoor expedition.
Our rainy walk turned out to be the highlight of the day. Sometimes, even the soggiest weather has its charms—especially when you know you can return to warmth and comfort afterward!
