Crafting a Clay World
Kate Markland
Our latest creative project involved a box of of air-dry clay and a whole lot of imagination! Gabriel and I set out to make our own clay characters, but first, we turned to some videos on the iPad for inspiration, learning a few tips on molding and shaping, and brainstorming what we wanted to create.
Gabriel took to the project with impressive focus. Following instructions carefully, he measured out the clay in precise amounts and started shaping each piece with steady hands. His first creations were a series of imaginative characters: aliens, an astronaut, an airplane, and even a control tower. Piece by piece, Gabriel brought his ideas to life, adding little details that gave each figure a personality of its own.
Together, we then crafted an octopus holding a treasure chest, giving it eight arms stretched in all directions. We even added tiny clay “gold coins” and little fish for extra detail.
Once our characters were complete, we decided they needed a place to live, so we set about transforming the box the clay came in into a mini diorama. With a bit of creativity, we turned it into a scene where aliens, astronauts, and underwater creatures could all coexist.
This project was such a fun blend of imagination, teamwork, and hands-on crafting. Gabriel’s clay world now sits proudly in his bedroom!
