Conquering Helvellyn
Kate Markland
This year, Gabriel and I decided to take on the challenge of climbing Helvellyn. Starting from Thirlmere, one of the less busy routes to the summit, we were ready for an adventure that would test our endurance, give us breathtaking views, and leave us with a sense of achievement.
The Start: Excitement in the Air
The skies were clear as we set off from the car park near Thirlmere. Gabriel was buzzing with excitement, and my backpack stuffed with lunch, snacks. and plenty of water. I’d packed all the essentials, including map, compass and layers, as I knew the weather could change quickly the higher we climbed. The forecast promised a good day, but you never know with the Lake District!
The Climb: Steep Paths and Stunning Views
We began our ascent on a well-marked path as we climbed higher, the path became steeper, and the landscape began to open up. Giving us expansive views of the valley below, and with every step, the beauty of the Lake District unfolded around us. Gabriel took it all in stride.
We’d stop every so often to catch our breath, snack on some fruit or a chocolate bar, and take in the spectacular views. The sight of Thirlmere growing smaller and smaller in the distance reminded us just how far we’d come.
Gabriel's Adventure Spirit
Gabriel’s adventurous spirit shone throughout the climb. Whether it was scrambling up rocky sections or spotting little streams to hop over.
He showed incredible resilience as he learnt how to pace himself. It’s moments like those that make these adventures so special—watching Gabriel not only enjoy the experience but also build confidence in his abilities.
The Final Push: Reaching the Summit
As we neared the top, the wind picked up, and the temperature dropped, but we could sense we were close. The landscape became more rugged, and the path, though steeper, was a welcome sign that we were almost at the summit.
When we finally reached the top of Helvellyn, the feeling was indescribable. Standing on one of England’s highest peaks, with the world sprawling out beneath us, felt like we’d achieved something truly special. The views from the summit were spectacular, stretching out to the surrounding fells and lakes.
As we sat together at the summit, I felt a deep sense of pride and joy. Not only had we climbed this incredible mountain, but we’d done it together, creating memories that would last a lifetime.
Heading Back: A Different Kind of Challenge
The descent was a different kind of challenge. Although going down was easier on the lungs, it was tougher on the legs. By now Gabriel had realised the importance of pacing and took it all in stride, even running some sections.
The path back to Thirlmere was just as beautiful as the climb up. The views of the surrounding peaks were just as impressive on the way down.
By the time we reached the bottom, we were both tired but incredibly satisfied and ready for a rewarding ice cream!
The Joy of the Journey
Climbing Helvellyn from Thirlmere was not just about reaching the summit—it was about the entire experience. From the quiet moments on the trail, surrounded by nature, to the bursts of excitement when we reached the summit, every part of the day felt special.
For me, it was also a reminder of the importance of these shared adventures with Gabriel. The sense of achievement we both felt, the conversations we had along the way, and the joy of experiencing something so awe-inspiring together made this climb truly unforgettable.
Conclusion: Adventures Are Always Worth It
As we drove home, both exhausted and exhilarated, I couldn’t help but think about how lucky we are. Climbing Helvellyn was a big challenge, but it was also a reminder of how much fun adventure can be—especially when shared with Gabriel. His curiosity, enthusiasm, and determination made the climb even more rewarding.
I know we’ll be talking about this day for a long time to come. It’s experiences like these that remind me why I love exploring the great outdoors with Gabriel—because every adventure brings us closer and creates memories that will last forever.
