Boscombe Rocks

Kate Markland

Boscombe Beach has become one of our go-to spots for a day out, and it's no surprise that Gabriel loves it there. What started as a simple cycling route has turned into a regular tradition, with the promise of fun and exploration at the end of the ride. Every time we head to Boscombe, there’s one thing Gabriel can’t wait to do—scramble over the beach rocks.

The Ride to Boscombe: A Scenic Journey

Our trips to Boscombe always start the same way: with a ride along the coast. Cycling along the seafront is one of my favourite things to do with Gabriel. The views are beautiful, the air is fresh, and there’s always a sense of freedom when you’re pedalling with the sea beside you. Plus, it gives us a chance to chat and catch up—well, at least until Gabriel speeds ahead, eager to reach the beach!

Once we arrive, he barely waits to drop his bike before running towards his favourite part: the rocks!

Climbing Rocks and Finding Adventures

For Gabriel, the rocks at Boscombe are like a playground. The mix of climbing, jumping, and exploring keeps him occupied for hours, and it’s easy to see why it’s one of his favourite places. As soon as his feet hit the sand, he’s off, finding his way to the highest points and figuring out how to get there without a single lift from me—though I still occasionally get a shout for some encouragement!

One of the things I love most about these trips is how Gabriel always seems to make a new friend while we’re there. Boscombe’s rocks attract kids like magnets, all keen to conquer the peaks and hop across the boulders. What starts as solo climbing often turns into a group effort, with kids naturally helping each other. They point out the best footholds, offer tips, and cheer each other on. It's one of those simple yet heartwarming scenes: children forming instant bonds through adventure.

Gabriel is usually right in the thick of it, encouraging someone to take that jump or showing a new friend how to get to the top. His confidence shines in moments like this. The support they all give each other as they figure out tricky climbs or push themselves to leap across gaps is wonderful to watch. There’s a mix of challenge and fun, but mostly, it’s about working together.

A Perfect Spot for Confidence and Play

For me, Boscombe’s rocks are more than just a place for Gabriel to burn off energy—they’ve become a place where he builds his confidence. The climbing tests his physical abilities, but it’s the teamwork and encouragement between kids that really stands out. I’ve seen him take on new challenges, with a mix of nerves and excitement, and overcome them thanks to his determination and the support of his new friends.

It’s one of those places where you can almost see them growing before your eyes, in both skill and spirit. The way the kids encourage each other makes it feel like more than just play—it’s an adventure in building trust, resilience, and camaraderie.

A Day Well Spent

Boscombe has become more than just a beach for us. It’s a place where we escape, where Gabriel tests his limits, and where the simplicity of climbing rocks turns into something much more meaningful. Every time we go, it feels like a new adventure—one that brings us closer together and helps Gabriel continue to grow into the independent, brave kid I’m so proud of.

Here’s to many more trips, more friends, and more rocky climbs!
